History

Bosnia and Herzegovina consists of two historic regions: Bosnia is derived from the river Bosna and Herzegovina goes back to the rulers title ‘Herceg’ = Duke. In ancient history the region was part of the Roman Empire and got inhabited by the Slavs at around 600. In 1463 Bosnia was conquered by the Ottomans. In 1527, the Bosnia Eyalet was established, which included the area of the current state of Bosnia-Herzegovina, parts of Croatia and Montenegro, from which Pashaluk Bosnia ultimately resulted in 1580.
In 1878 Bosnia was subordinated under Austro-Hungarian administration. During this time the term Bosnia and Herzegovina was coined. After the First World War, Bosnia and Herzegovina was part of the Kingdom of Yugoslavia. With the establishment of the Social Federalist Republic of Yugoslavia after the Second World War, a federal state with six sub-republics arose.
On the 2nd of March 1992 the country seceded from the union of Yugoslavia and was named Republic of Bosnia and Herzegovina. The International recognition took place on the 17th of April 1992. It was followed by three years of war between Serb, Croat and Bosnian units.

Close to the city Foca the biggest primeval forest of Europe, called Perucica, is located.
The river Naretva is the longest river of Bosnia-Herzegovina and flows into the Adria. It is estimated for the natural landscapes which can be encountered in the course of the river: caves, gorges and deltas.
Bosnian coffee culutre (Mokkas) is an attitude towards life. Drinking coffee is not only a very special treat, but also hospitality. Usually the pleasure of several coffees means the beginning of a friendship.
